PROVIDENCE TRAVELS CROSS-CITY… The Providence College men's lacrosse team will travel cross-city to Brown University on Tuesday, Feb. 21 for a non-conference match-up against the Bears. Face-off is set for 3:00 p.m.

SERIES BREAKDOWN… Since 1989, the Friars and Bears have met 27 times. Brown leads the all-time series, 25-2.

MOST RECENT MEETING... The teams last met during the 2022 campaign at Anderson Stadium. The Friars fell to then-No. 8 Brown, 22-10. Matt Grillo led the Friars' offense with four goals. Four additional Friars found the back of the net.

OCEAN STATE CUP... The Friars' game against Brown marks the last of two games in the annual Ocean State Cup.

Bryant will play at Brown on Tuesday, April 25 to close out the Ocean State Cup.

Providence was last crowned Ocean State Cup Champion during the 2020 season. Providence defeated Bryant, 16-9, and Brown, 13-12, in overtime.

FOURTH QUARTER PUSH TO VICTORY...Providence used a dominant fourth quarter to defeat Siena on Saturday, Feb. 18. The Friars outscored the Saints 7-0 in the final period to earn the 18-11 victory. Three players tallied hat tricks including Michael Chabra (three goals), Ty Thureson (three goals) and Jack Horrigan (three goals). Ryan Bell added two goals and two assists for four points.

On the defensive end, goalkeeper James Corasaniti recorded 17 saves and successfully shut out the Saints in the final quarter.

FIRST CUP GAME... Providence fell to Bryant, 15-14, in an Ocean State Cup battle on Saturday, Feb. 11. Ryan Bell recorded a career-best 10 points on a career-high six goals and four assists. Jack Horrigan posted his second hat trick of the season with three goals. Chad Cannon scored his first collegiate goal. Goalkeeper James Corasaniti tallied a season-high 18 saves.

Providence outscored Bryant 5-1 in the fourth quarter to mount a late comeback effort. Bell scored three of the Friars' five goals - all in the final 10 minutes of the game.

PROVIDENCE POWERS PAST HOLY CROSS... Providence got out to a 3-0 lead and never trailed en route to a 12-9 victory in the season opener vs. Holy Cross on Feb. 5 at Anderson Stadium. The match-up was featured by Lax.com as the organization's first-ever Game of the Week.

Michael Chabra and Jack Horrigan each recorded hat tricks in the game. Chabra finished with four goals, while Horrigan tallied three.

Patrick McAleavey and Richie Joseph each tallied a game-high two assists. James Corasaniti, a graduate transfer from Fairfield University, made his debut with the Friars in goal and earned the win with 15 saves.

JAMES CORASANITI AND RYAN BELL EARN BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR RECOGNITION... James Corasaniti and Ryan Bell earned BIG EAST weekly honors recognition on Monday, Feb. 20, following the team's 18-11 victory over Siena. Corasaniti was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Bell earned Midfielder of the Week.

Corasaniti made 17 saves against the Saints, just one shy of his season-high 18 against Bryant. Eleven of his saves came in the second half. Corasaniti was able to shut out the Saints in the fourth quarter, tallying six saves as Providence outscored Siena, 7-0. This is the third-consecutive game in which Corasaniti reached double-digit saves. The graduate student registered a .607 save percentage on the day, improving his overall save percentage to .588.

Ryan Bell registered four points against Siena, notching two goals and two assists. All of Bell's points came in the second half, recording a goal and an assist in both the third and fourth quarters. This recognition marks the third-straight BIG EAST weekly honor recognition for the sophom*ore.

MATT GRILLO MAKES PROGRAM HISTORY… Matt Grillo has amassed 110 career goals. Grillo ranks third all-time at Providence in career goals, behind Ed Loiselle '92 (136) and Ken Leahy '00 (112). Grillo also is tied for 13th in program history in career scoring, with 136 points. Leahy is the Friars' all-time leading scorer with 188 points on 112 goals and 76 assists.

PROGRAM BEGINS BOBBY BENSON ERA… The Friars welcomed a new coaching staff for the 2023 season led by Head Coach Bobby Benson. Benson spent the last two seasons at Maryland as the offensive coordinator during the Terps' run to the NCAA title in 2022. Maryland registered a 33-1 record during Benson's two seasons in College Park, earned two Big Ten Championships and made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championship game. Before joining the Terps, Benson spent 14 seasons as the offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Johns Hopkins. He helped Hopkins to 11 NCAA appearances, eight quarterfinal bids, three Final Fours and two National Championship games.

MEET THE STAFF... Casey Brodersen, who spent the last 12 seasons as the Associate Head Coach at Bryant University, was hired by Bobby Benson to serve as Associate Head Coach at Providence. He helped the Bulldogs to six Northeast Conference titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances. Carroll Kennedy joined the Friars as an Assistant Coach. Kennedy worked alongside Benson at Maryland during the 2022 sea son and was previously named USILA Assistant Coach of the Year while at Limestone University in 2015. Colin Munro joined the staff as a Volunteer Assistant after completing his collegiate career at fellow BIG EAST Conference member, Georgetown, in 2022.

WELCOME TO FRIARTOWN… The Friars have 13 freshmen on the roster in 2023. Newcomers include Tyler Flynn (Setauket, N.Y.), Dean Metzger (Garden City South, N.Y.), Harrison Sweeney (West Hartford, Conn.), Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.), Jackson Coutu (Upton, Mass.), Eddie Perry (Bridgewater, Mass.), Owen Finetto (Haworth, N.J.), Luke Schmitt (Garden City, N.Y.), Eric Webb (Westfield, N.J.), Ian Olenik (Windham, N.H.), Frankie Carroll (East Setauket, N.Y.), Tom Sarni (Lynnfield, Mass.), and Cullen Mulhern (Lawrenceville, N.J.).

Additionally, four transfers joined the Friars roster upon Bobby Benson's arrival as Head Coach. James Corasaniti (New York, N.Y.), a graduate transfer from Fairfield University, and Patrick Yowan (Manchester, Vt.) a sophom*ore transfer from Loyola Maryland highlight the goaltending unit. Sophom*ores Pierce Gregory (Sherborn, Mass.) and Vincent Horton (Scituate, Mass.) come to Providence after playing at Bryant University as rookies in 2022.

IMPACT PLAYERS… Providence will continue to look to key returners as the 2023 season picks up. Junior Michael Chabra and sophom*ore Ryan Bell have been key pieces for the Friar offense in the first three games of the season. Chabra, after finishing fourth on the team in scoring in the 2022 season, started this season tallying four goals to lead the Friars past Holy Cross. Bell finished last season ranked 13th in the nation in assists per game (2.43) and second on the team in scoring with 43 points. He has continued to build off that success, contributing 10 goals and seven assists in the first three games. Attack player Jack Horrigan has also made significant contributions to the Friar offense. The sophom*ore has recorded a hat trick in each of the first three games.

Senior Grant Latimer continues to anchor the defensive line with help from sophom*ore Gregg Dennison. Latimer has collected three groundballs with two caused turnovers. Dennison has collected 12 groundballs, six of which came against Siena, with two caused turnovers. Graduate transfer goalkeeper James Corasaniti has earned a .588 save percentage with 50 saves so far.

FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN BIG EAST POLL... Providence was picked to finish fifth in the 2023 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll (9 points). Georgetown was picked to win the league, having collected five first-place votes and 25 points overall. Denver (20 points) was second and Villanova, who received one first-place vote and 18 points was selected third. Rounding out the conference standings was Marquette (13 points) in fourth and St. John's (five points) in sixth.

SCOUTING NO. 20 BROWN… This year, the Bears were selected to finish fifth in the Ivy League Preseason Coaches' Poll. Brown fell to Quinnipiac, 11-10 in its season-opener.

PLAYERS TO WATCH… Six different players scored for the Bears against Quinnipiac. Scoring was highlighted by junior attack player Ben Locke, who recorded three goals. Senior Devon McLane returned with two goals in the first game after leading the team in scoring (71 points), goals (47) and assists (24) in the 2022 season.

Face-off specialist Matthew Gunty has returned for his senior season after ending the 2022 campaign with a .516 face-off percentage (204-395). Against Quinnipiac, Gunty went 10-23 on face-offs.

WHAT'S NEXT… The Friars will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday, Feb. 25 to face Saint Joseph's University. Face-off is set for 12:00 p.m.
